Finally, The Collective Quarterly is ready for pre-order! Jay and I have been working on this project for the past year and a half, and its now ready to share with you.
The Collective is a travel + lifestyle magazine with an emphasis on how things are created, be it menswear, food, drink, etc. We like to think of it as a sort of National Geographic for a new generation. Each issue follows a small group of artists and artisans on a trip to a particular region of the country or the world. With the first issue, we’ve partnered with artists and some of our favorite American companies (including Faribault Woolen Mills and Duluth Pack) to create uncommon goods based on our trip experience.
Check out our pre-order store, you won’t be sorry!
Jay and I were hired recently by Red Wing and Barneys to travel to Red Wing, MN to document the making of their first collaboration. It was a great honor and we could not have been more pleased with the result. This photo essay has been broken into 3 parts, please enjoy.
The Safari Short has been a staple of the Rogue Territory collection for a few seasons now. It was originally inspired by standard issue military trousers for the infantry personnel stationed in Vietnam. The gusseted pockets which are the defining detail of the short was pulled from a 30s work shirt chest pocket. When combined the 2 details make for a super functional and very subtle design.
We wanted to incorporate something from the Texan landscape since we were taking these with us to Marfa, TX for The Collective Quarterly. The end result was a custom pattern inspired by the traditional Navajo woven blankets that are a huge part of the mid-western culture and have been produced in Arizona, New Mexico and parts of Texas for over 200 years. To keep the clean aesthetic of the short we decided that the print was not going to be the main focus but used more as an accent. Like a colorful pocket square in a blazer, these shorts have just enough pop to add intrigue and remain classy.

We got the opportunity to shoot a special collaboration with one of our favorite designers and great friend, Kristina from Fischer Clothing. She has made a limited edition run of a print designed by Ilana Kohn. This collaboration instantly received notoriety as it was featured on the Daily Candy blog in their 2013 wedding guide. Be sure to head over to Fischer Clothing’s online shop to pick up a piece of this one of a kind product.
